SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE SCIENTIST (Quote): "Normally when I conduct a fruit development study I determine the effect of Postbloom Fruit Drop (PFD) if treatments are applied during bloom. The purpose is to determine if PFD was present in the test block and note any treatment effect on PFD. Data collected for PFD evaluation includes counting the number of buttons and fruit across a given number of fruiting sites. PFD causes the unique symptom of aborted fruit buttons. By recording the total number of buttons and fruit, one can compute the percentage of fruit retention. Fruit retention is a simple method to determine how well a given treatment performed keeping fruit on the tree. What was interesting this year is that the aborted buttons fell off the tree during the spring. An initial observation in April determined significant PFD was present in the trial as indicated from aborted fruit buttons; perhaps 40% fruit drop resulted from PFD. However, the newly formed buttons dropped off towards the end of May. I have conducted many PFD trials over the last few years and have never observed this event. The same observation was made this year across several trials in Valencia Orange at different locations. The percent fruit retention from PFD was not able to be calculated because few buttons were present across the entire test site. The total number of fruit per 0.5 m3 was counted and recorded on 7 April and 5 June. Fruit was counted at about 5 ft in height at the mid-section each side of the tree (east vs west). Both sides of the tree were evaluated and presented in the data table per side (1.5 m3) and total fruit per 3.0 m3. Fruit drop from April to June is from both typical fruit drop and PFD." YIELD BY TREATMENT (in Box/acre)

Special notes from the scientist

Quote: "Optimal citrus growing conditions were observed this year in the test block.Good rainfall during the fall and improved Citrus Greening foliar fertilizer programs resulted in a yield increase of more than double compared to the previous 4 years. Because of this overall yield increase, research treatments were not as effective in improving yield to what may have been observed in previous years." (M Edenfield, Ph.D)

  • RESULTS:
  • • One box is 90 Lbs of fruit
  • • Important note: T2,T4,T5 received 3 applications A,B,C but Treatment # received only 2 applications (B,C)
  • • Results at Dec 2018 (Box/Acre): 417 [T1]; 424 [T2]; 438 [T3]; 405 [T4]; 448 [T5]
  • [T5] MicroN+ Cyan 365® at 1 Qt/acre rate is the best treatment to promote the yield in Box/Acre.
  • [T3] Paradoxally Cyan 365® with no added MicroN at the rate of 1 Pt/Acre has a greater result than in [T2] Cyan 365® at 1Qt/Acre.
  • [T5] is +31 Boxes/Acre (+7.5%) than in [T1] Grower Standard
  • [T4] the micronutrient solution by itself, is below the grower standard. (-12 Box/Acre, -3%)
  • • [T4] is LESS 43 Box/Acre (-10.6%) when it is not combined with Cyan 365®

Notes: Following these results, we can imagine that the treatment with Cyan 365® at the rate of 1 Pt/acre + a micro nutritional solution might generate an even greater difference. This shall be experimented in 2019.

PREMATURE FRUIT DROP (in Number)
  • • Fruit drop count at Fall 2018 (number): 164 [T1]; 126 [T2]; 119 [T3]; 136 [T4]; 129 [T5]
  • • Rate of the reduction for Premature Fruit Drop (in%): -27% [T3]; -23% [T2]; -21% [T5]
  • [T3] Cyan 365® at 1 Pt/Acre is the best treatment to help at reducing the Early Fruit Drop with only two applications at 1 Pt/Acre rate.
  • • -45 Premature fruit count (-27.4%), means LESS fruit drop in [T3] (Cyan 365® @ 1 Pt/Acre rate) than in [T1] G.S. without Cyan 365®
  • • 7 Premature fruit count difference (5.5%) between [T2] Cyan 1 Qt/Acre rate and [T3] Cyan 1pt/Acre rate.

Notes: Fruit drop from April to June is from both typical fruit drop and PFD. According a special note from the scientist here above, there is a suspicion of about 40% PFD disease severity for this trial.

ROI for Lb Solid/BOX with Treatment Five [T5] (Cyan 365®+Micronutrient solution)
  • Treatment Five [T5], is a combination between a micronutrient solution at the rate of 3 Qts/Acre + Cyan 365® at the rate of 1 Qt/Acre.
  • Applied 3 times.
  • The treatment of Cyan 365 at 1 quart + the MicroN solution increased the pound solid yield of 0.5 per box which equates to a revenue increase of $1.20 at price of $2.40 per pound solid (Cost of treatment not included).
  • +$1.20 per box for ROI on Lb Solid/Box. (Cost of treatments not included)

Notes: Cyan 365® in this treatment has been applied 3 times as here after: Application (A): 02/23/18, when trees were at bud swell and 1% bloom present.(Pre Bloom). Application (B): 03/19/18, when 99% of the fruit had set (1% bloom present). (Post Bloom). Application (C): 09/23/18, at fall.

ROI for Lb Solid/BOX with Treatment Five [T3] (Cyan 365® alone)
  • Treatment Three [T3], Cyan 365® at 1 Pt/Acre rate with NO MicroN added is simply added to the Grower Std.
  • Applied ONLY TWO times. (B,C)
  • The treatment [T3] of Cyan 365 at 1 Pt/Acre increased the pound solid yield of 0.3 per box which equates to a revenue increase of +$0.72 at price of $2.40 per pound solid (Cost of treatment not included).
  • +$0.72 per box for ROI on Lb Solid/Box. (Cost of treatment not included)

FRUIT COUNT AFTER 2 MONTHS (per 3 cubic meter)
  •  Fruit count after 2 Months period (per 3 M3): 84.3-59 [T1]; 106-66.2 [T2]; 92-68.2 [T3]; 94.7-61.7 [T4]; 104.8-69.5 [T5]
  • • After a period of two months, Cyan 365® at 1 Qt/Acre combined with a MicroN solution produces the best result.
  • • +18% Fruit count in [T5] (combo MicroN+Cyan365 @ 1 Qt/acre) Vs [T1] Grow. Std
  • • +15.6% Fruit count in [T3] (Cyan 365 @ 1Pt/acre rate) Vs [T1] Grow. Std.
  • • +12.2% Fruit count in [T2] (Cyan 365 @ 1Qt/acre rate) Vs [T1] Grow. Std.
  • • 3 m3 is about 4 Yd3

Notes: After [T5], [T3] Cyan 365® at 1 Pt/acre rate is producing the best second treatment. Accordingly, it would have been interesting to try Cyan 365® at 1 Pt/acre rate combined with this micronutritional solution.
